Evo-Stik First Division North 25 April 2011 Home point in Home finish by Ken Milgate Durham City 1 Home-Jackson 75 Witton Albion 1 Southern 38 City completed their home fixtures for the season with a spirited performance to come from behind to earn a point when they had more chances than their opponents for victory both before and after the equalizer. In the Witton half from the whistle, Stephen Thompson had Matt Cooper at full stretch in City\'s second attack to save his low drive after a David Dowson lay-off before Thompson won the ball on the right before finding Dowson who then provided Andrew Stephenson with another opportunity to stretch Cooper. On 12minutes a great Stephenson through ball to Dowson was in turn hit across the keeper and wide of the far post. Next it was the turn of Amar Purewal to showcase City\'s irrepressible attacking quality when his shot on the turn on the quarter hour flew wide of the post before a thirty five-yarder curled narrowly over the bar. Another probing pass from Thompson gave Dowson another shot on goal, but Cooper was well positioned to effect the save. Not until the 26th minute did the visitors register their first attempt on goal, a free-header over the bar from Josh Hancock following a Danny Maguire corner. City\'s defensive wall blocked Maguire\'s free-kick, and Paul Ennis blazed his shot over the bar before Dowson went close again on 37minutes. A minute later Witton went ahead when Nathan Southern tapped in the loose ball after James Winter had parried Jamie Harrison\'s initial shot on goal. Matt Wood then rifled a shot past the post before James Winter denied Harrison with his feet as Witton finished the half in the driving seat. Hancock again headed off target from a Maguire corner before City missed an absolute sitter on 56minutes, Cooper parrying Amar Purewal\'s shot to the unmarked Jack Pounder who only needed to tap in the ball for parity but inexplicably elected to blast for glory high and wide in the process. A minute later James Winter saved at the foot of his post to deny Wood before the bustling Thompson hit the post. Even Rufus Ayre got in on the act and toe poked a goal attempt just after the hour. The turning-point of the game was the introduction of Joshua Home-Jackson for the hapless Pounder. Within a minute he had turned in the box to fire wide and glanced a header wide from a Tommy English corner before earning City a deserved equalizer when receiving a pass from Dowson following a defensive slip-up to smash the ball into the net from close range. Thereon in it was City who looked the likelier winners. Amar Purewal was clean through on goal on 78minutes, but Cooper got down well to smother the shot before Dowson lofted a shot too high from some ten yards and Stephenson struck a distant drive wide. City impressed with their link-up play, and both Stephenson and Thompson hit some telling passes to set up advanced colleagues; the midfield of Stephenson and Elliot Cutts was a hive of activity and the attackers never gave the Witton defence a moment of peace. The reverse fixture on Friday could be mouth-watering!
