Evo-Stik First Division North 05 April 2011 A feast of chances but goal famine continues by Ken Milgate Bamber Bridge 1 Waddecar 38 Durham City 0 For the second match City spurned a raft of goal-scoring opportunities to return home with nothing to show for their considerable efforts. It was City who mounted the first attacks, Evann Graham blasting over the bar after taking a Joshua Home-Jackson lay-back from the byline in his stride and Amar Purewal sending his first-time effort likewise following a Tommy English corner. Excellent early control by referee Hutchinson then diffused an ugly tussle between Gary Brown and Neil Reynolds, the yellow cards brandished settling the issue and permitting a competitive but fairly-fought match to ensue. The hosts\' first shy at goal was a tame effort shot-on-the-turn by the impressive Mike Galliers on 13minutes before, five minutes later, Evann Graham pulled his left-shot wide of the post after nifty footwork by Amar Purewal following an excellent lobbed pass from English. An Alistair Waddecar in-swinging free-kick floated just wide of the far post on 24minutes before Gavin Clark\'s shot from distance lacked both power and direction. As the game flowed from end to end, Chris Marlow fluffed his shot when well-placed at the post on the half hour before City went close twice, David Dowson\'s right-wing cross reaching Amar Purewal a split second too late and Evann Graham\'s left-wing cross being a trifle too high for Home-Jackson. Seven minutes before half time, City were caught out on the break, Galliers storming clear before releasing the ball to Waddecar who scored with a crisp drive. City had a single chance to equalize before the break, but an English free-kick from twenty five yards out dipped just too late before it cleared the bar. City took the game to Bamber in the early stages of the second half, Amar Purewal shooting wide of the post before keeper Ben Hinchliffe denied Ross Wilkinson after an English corner. Either side of the hour mark Galliers blasted wide after excellent set-up play by Waddecar, and Home-Jackson was not too far off with a forty yarder. Hinchliffe then came to his side\'s rescue on 67 and 68minutes, finger-tipping an English free-kick round the post before somehow clawing clear an Arjun Purewal effort following a goalmouth scramble. Galliers was wide again from distance before Dowson hit two late drives through a sea of legs in a crowded box, Hinchliffe being well positioned on both occasions to deny City\'s best player. A goal would have been a just return for his vision and space-making runs throughout the match. Neither side are in promotion or relegation positions, and the match was a good exhibition of fast-flowing football. City, however, will yet again rue their inability to turn chances into goals, proof being in abundance at the aptly-named QED Stadium.
