Evo-Stik First Division North 22 March 2011 City pressure Curzon to the limit by Ken Milgate Durham City 1 Dowson 62 Curzon Ashton 1 Evans 33 City\'s recently improved form passed muster against regular play-off candidates Curzon Ashton; a draw was a fair result on the balance of play although City had the more clear-cut chances in the second half to register their fourth win in a row. The game started at a fast and furious pace from end to end, but it was the visitors who posed the greater threat, Lewis Graham saving bravely at the feet of Chris McDonagh before Steven Moore headed over a David Birch free-kick. For City Stephen Thompson\'s shot from Amar Purewal\'s feed was wide of the target, as was Moore\'s drive from the edge of the box, but on 20minutes Thompson went close with a lob over an advancing keeper and an untenanted goal, the effort clearing both David Carnell and crossbar, after Andrew Stephenson had set up the chance with a lob of his own. Just before the half hour mark Carnell claimed the ball as Amar Purewal chased a great David Dowson through ball. On 33minutes, however, Curzon went ahead when City cleared a Birch free-kick from the left, the ball landing just outside the box at the feet of Joseph Evans whose low drive flashed through a sea of legs in a crowded box to beat Lewis Graham inside the far post. A Tommy English attempt from outside the box cleared the bar three minutes later before a Thompson drive ruffled the side netting as he ran onto an English short corner, Thompson then warming Carnell\'s hands with a snap shot in first-half stoppage-time. The second got off to an explosive start when James Aloo marred an impressive opening forty five minutes\' performance when he was dismissed for a dangerous tackle on Stephenson. Six minutes later Lewis Graham was forced into a low diving save by another Birch free-kick as Curzon quickly re-organized before City could make any capital of their one-man advantage. Not for nothing are Curzon consistently a top side in the division; equally true are City\'s current impressive team spirit and work ethic and they equalized on 62minutes when the ebullient Thompson fed Dowson who turned his marker before driving low past Carnell. Thompson continued to hassle the Curzon defence, much to their visible and vocal annoyance, and his enthusiasm galvanized City as they sought a second goal. Both City full-backs went close: Gareth Ayers ended a strong left-wing run with a low shot which the keeper turned round for a corner before an unmarked Craig Harbord drove wide of the far post from the edge of the box. By now Curzon were reduced to long-range shots, Phil Edghill giving Lewis Graham a comfortable save before McDonagh hit a snap shot wide. City, however, went close twice in the closing stages, an Elliot Cutts low shot lacking sufficient power to trouble Carnell, before substitutes Evann Graham and Jack Pounder combined in the last of three added-on minutes, the former crossing for a header that went the wrong side of the far post. This was a benchmark result for a reinvigorated City who have nothing to lose here on in but their self-belief and confidence.
