Evo-Stik First Division North 19 March 2011 Mossley rock as City roll by Ken Milgate Mossley 0 Durham City 2 Thompson 25 Dowson 70 In-form City made it three wins on the trot with a grafting performance over an out-of-sorts Mossley outfit. The margin of victory could have been greater with sharper finishing and but for last-ditch clearances. Stephen Thompson\'s long-range effort on 2minutes was comfortably held by Peter Collinge, but Lewis Graham was forced to fingertip round the post for a corner a Mike Fish looping header a minute later. But with twelve minutes on the clock City were denied by two goal-line clearances in quick succession: David Dowson\'s hooked shot from Ross Wilkinson\'s header after a Tommy English corner was hacked clear before Danny Warner denied Amar Purewal. The hosts came more into the game as Cavell Coo split City\'s midfield with a peach of a through ball which Chris Pauley only narrowly failed to reach in time, and Lewis Graham conceded a corner with a tip round save from a Lee Rick shot from distance when City lost possession. But it was City who took the lead when Elliot Cutts won the ball with a powerful header to set up Thompson who used his body\'s strength to good effect to hold off his marker before beating Collinge with a low shot inside the post. Two minutes later Collinge deflected a Dowson shot onto the roof of the net before Andrew Stephenson headed wide and Coo drove wide. A promising Thompson run and dribble shortly before half time ended in a disappointing shot before the Purewal brothers ended proceedings, Arjun with a booking for a high tackle and Amar with a shot wide of the target. Mossley started the second half in attacking mode, Pauley\'s low left-wing cross being hacked clear before Coo\'s left-foot shot gave Lewis Graham a comfortable save. City went close to a second goal on 56minutes when English intercepted a midfield pass but his shot on goal was high and wide of the left-hand post. Little was now to be seen of the Mossley attack, but City\'s Amar Purewal fired wide, Thompson\'s bicycle kick lacked power and Amar Purewal\'s shot from a Thompson cross was sliced clear for a corner. City\'s inevitable second goal was superbly crafted: Gareth Ayers fed a magnificent line ball to Dowson who lobbed into an empty net as Collinge raced off his line in vain to avert the danger. Mossley staged a token recovery with substitute Kristian Dennis giving Lewis Graham a routine save before Coo fired over the crossbar. Substitute Jack Pounder then set up Dowson who drove wide before Amar Purewal was similarly off target from a Thompson assist. The match was wrapped up when Thompson sent a free-kick wide and substitute Chris Hall shot wide when well placed. City rarely looked troubled as their winning run continues; the clean sheet is an added bonus as the goals difference column continues to approach single figures, albeit still in deficit. Curzon Ashton, however, will provide much sterner opposition on Tuesday evening.
