Evo-Stik First Division North 12 April 2011 Warrington win from distance by Ken Milgate Durham City 1 Dowson 7 Warrington Town 3 Heald 23 Collins 54 Finley 70 Despite taking an early lead City failed to put away easier chances and contributed to their defeat by spectating, reckless abandonment and collective back-pedalling. That said, it was an exciting game to watch and the visitors proved themselves more impressive opposition than in the reverse fixture. On 2minutes the lively Chris Gahgan was not picked up as he drove wide of the post from outside the box; but it was City who went closer two minutes later when David Dowson was put clean through on goal, Paul Pritchard saving well from his shot and Amar Purewal sending the rebound over the bar. The miss was forgotten three minutes later when a great Tommy English cross picked out Dawson in the box, the striker beating Pritchard with a low drive into the opposite bottom corner. Off-target efforts followed from both sides: Chris Thompson reacted to a headed clearance, Amar Purewal fired across goal and Stephen Thompson cleared the bar. On 20minutes Pritchard stood firm at his post to field a Stephen Thompson fierce drive aimed straight at him, Adam Wade for the visitors doing likewise to test Lewis Graham. Shortly after Pritchard had saved an Elliot Cutts low drive, Warrington drew level when City\'s midfield froze, allowing Andy Heald to beat Lewis Graham from all of thirty yards. City responded immediately with Dowson finding the side netting, but then Wade fired over the bar as the game moved quickly from end to end. A minute before the break Pritchard was marginally first to a superb English pass, Amar Purewal being the City player denied. City survived an early scare in the opening minute of the second half, Chris Thompson\'s shot from a Gahgan right-wing cross bouncing off Lewis Graham\'s legs and then his own in turn for a relieving goal-kick. On 54minutes City were caught out by a right-wing breakaway, and Lewis Graham vacated his goal in cavalier fashion, giving Alan Collins an untenanted goal to lob into for the lead. English hit the post in the next move, and Pritchard then needed a second take to claim a Stephen Thompson shot from outside the box. Warrington were proving increasingly difficult to break down, and sub Gary Brown, on for Cutts, was limited to a toe-poke from distance on 69minutes which cleared the far upright. But the visitors sealed their victory with twenty minutes to go when City\'s defence gave Sam Finley too much room, the third goal being a shot from thirty five yards which Lewis Graham should at least have got a hand to. City mounted three late challenges as the visitors went for possession rather than more goals, Stephen Thompson cutting inside before giving Pritchard an easy save, Amar Purewal having a shot deflected for a corner and sub Andrew Stephenson\'s shot in stoppage-time giving the busy Pritchard a comfortable save. City looked the better side in the first half but were overrun in midfield; in contrast, the visitors worked more as a team and players were noticeably involved even when not in possession. City need to turn enthusiasm on the ball into a more committed work ethic when on the back foot.
