Evo-Stik First Division North 02 April 2011 Brocklehurst blinder denies City a look-in by Ken Milgate Skelmersdale United 2 Roberts 82 Field 90+2 Durham City 0 The fact that the match sponsors nominated the home keeper, Tom Brocklehurst, as the man of the match is fitting expression of how unlucky City were not to leave Stormy Corner with at least a point for their efforts. Skelmersdale did the early pressing, but it was City who went close to a goal on nine minutes when Stephen Thompson slipped a pass through to Elliot Cutts, but the midfielder\'s low drive was too close to the keeper. His counterpart, James Winter, safely fielded Dave Roberts\' low shot from outside the box before he had to pull off a good save to deny Ryan Wade within the space of two minutes. Gareth Ayers epitomized City\'s steely defence when both he and his opponent, Shaun Tuck, were injured in a full-blooded tussle for the ball in the box, City\'s defender recovering while Tuck limped off four minutes later. A Steve Akrigg shot hit the crossbar after a goalmouth melee before City had three good chances in quick succession just after the half hour: Cutts blasted over in the box, Jack Pounder should have buried David Dowson\'s right-wing cross but hit his shot straight at Brocklehurst before Thompson spooned his shot over the bar. Early in the second half James Winter dealt well with an awkwardly bouncing effort from Lewis Field before Brocklehurst thwarted City with three superb saves: an excellent palm-clearance from a Thompson free-kick and two saves from Amar Purewal, the first one at the foot of the post and the second at the expense of a corner. Both keepers were keeping their respective side in the game, and on 75minutes James Winter produced a cracking save to keep out a Kyle Armstrong shot from distance. Two minutes later City were down to ten men when substitute Dan Parker was red carded as last man for a potential goal-denying foul. The referee originally awarded a penalty but changed his mind after consulting his assistant linesman; Akrigg blasted wide from the free-kick. His miss was forgotten five minutes later when Dave Roberts gave James Winter no chance with a close-range header from a Paul Byrne left-wing cross. City still mounted attacks in search of an equalizer but pushed up once too often in stoppage-time to allow Field to add the second for the home side. There was little evidence on the field of play of the gulf between the teams in terms of league position and points, and City were more than a match for the potential play-off candidates.
