Evo-Stik First Division North 09 April 2011 Amar Amar Amar by Ken Milgate Leigh Genesis 0 Durham City 4 Dowson 11 Amar Purewal 45+2, 76, 87 An Amar Purewal hat-trick put City back on the goal trail, as they kept a rare clean sheet and did the double over the Division\'s basement side with a resounding victory on a bouncy castle of a pitch, a feat which did not, however, affect Citizen Shippy\'s round-shyness. But how things might have turned out if Marvin McDonald had not been caught unawares when an early fluffed clearance fell at his feet, his soft shot giving James Winter an easy save. Four minutes later City took the lead when Joshua Home-Jackson charged down a clearance in his own half to the feet of David Dowson who hared towards goal, holding off his marker, to round the home keeper and slot into an empty net. A later Dowson low drive from a Tommy English pass was deflected for a corner before Neil Smith gave James Winter another routine save from a throw-in. In a game so far of few shots on target an enterprising run down the left wing by full-back Dave Dempsey took him fifty yards and deep into City\'s half before testing James Winter from distance. Just as the first half was entering added-on time City scored a deserved second in respect of their greater possession and mobility, Amar Purewal robbing Stuart Rudd to beat Andy Farrimond with a side-footed drive. Leigh had the first chance of the second half when Steve Brockley headed wide Dempsey\'s free-kick. In contrast, Home-Jackson was a whisker away from connecting with an English free-kick. Chances then came thick and fast at both ends: Amar Purewal pushed a Home-Jackson through ball wide of the far post before Smith shot wide after being well marshalled away from a central shooting position and then hit a shot-on-the-turn straight at James Winter from ten yards. It is to Leigh\'s credit that they posed a greater threat when attacking up the slope, and James Winter pulled off a point-blank save on 70minutes to deny Nikos Parparigis following a corner. On 73minutes Andrew Stephenson came on for English and within a minute he had forced Farrimond to concede a corner after Dowson had broken clear before back-heeling to the City sub. Two minutes later it was Stephenson\'s through ball to Amar Purewal which earned City a third goal with a low shot past the keeper. A fourth goal looked on the cards when a Stephen Thompson cross-field pass found Elliot Cutts in space on the edge of the box but he steered his first-time drive wide of the far post. For all their endeavour up front Leigh looked brittle at the back and conceded a fourth three minutes from time, Dowson first hitting the post and Amar Purewal miscuing with an air shot before completing his hat-trick with a simple tap-in. Four could so easily have been five as Stephenson drew a good diving save from Farrimond and Thompson shot wide. This was not a game for the purist, but the end result was highly satisfactory for City: Amar Purewal will not score an easier hat-trick, but Craig Harbord caught the eye, winning just about everything in the air and making his presence felt with no-nonsense tackles and non-stop covering, in the process looking more at home in his unaccustomed defensive role.
