Evo-Stik First Division North 16 April 2011 Final scoreline tough luck on battling City by Ken Milgate Curzon Ashton 4 McDonagh 7, 53, 72 Davis 58 Durham City 1 Amar Purewal 68 Up against play-off hopefuls for the second match running, City had no luck at all despite monopolizing the first half in terms of attacks; Curzon upped their game after the break, but City kept their heads aloft and continued to threaten on the counter. After City had pressurized the home defence with some telling final passes, Curzon took the lead in fortuitous fashion: James Winter and Chris McDonagh challenged for Arjun Purewal\'s back pass, the ball breaking clear to McDonagh who stroked the ball into an empty net. On 11minutes Lee Mack shot wide from outside the box before City dominated play: Elliot Cutts hit a first-time effort over the bar before provider intercepted a pass hit along the edge of the box and beat his marker before hitting his shot over the bar. Stephen Thompson then cut in from the right to beat two men before disappointing with a soft shot before Tommy English had a shot deflected for a corner from which Thompson\'s header was cleared off the line by Daniel Lyons. Chris Worsley and Joseph Evans were off target with long-range efforts, in between which David Dowson charged down David Carnell\'s kick from hand, the rebound clearing the bar to safety. City had two great chances to draw level just before the break: Amar Purewal shot straight at the keeper from close range, as did Dowson a minute later after receiving a great ball from defence from Gareth Ayers. In the opening exchanges of the second half James Winter saved Worsley\'s header from a free-kick, and Thompson\'s angled drive was deflected for a corner. Curzon then increased their lead when an Evans cross found McDonagh unmarked in the box before adding a third when a Harry Davis cross into the box beat everyone. City responded in positive fashion just after the hour when a Thompson drive produced a fingertip save over the bar from Carnell. A thoroughly-deserved consolation goal duly arrived on 68minutes when Amar Purewal scored with a low drive from a Thompson feed, but his brother then upended sub Matthew Purcell, McDonagh sending James Winter the wrong way and thereby completing his hat-trick from the spot. Ayers was injured in the build-up to the goal and was stretchered off to be replaced by Joshua Home-Jackson. Evans then blasted wide, as did Dowson when well placed at the post before Thompson floated a cross into the box to Ross Wilkinson, the defender\'s effort being cleared for a corner. City\'s only remaining sub, Jack Pounder, came on for Evann Graham for the final ten minutes and soon curled a left-foot shot over the bar from an Amar Purewal feed. City could well do with a change of fortune. They are creating so many clear-cut chances with positive and at times adventurous attacking play with a poor return for their efforts. Ossett Albion, be warned!
